It is best to limit the amount of alcohol you drink while taking tadalafil. Keep tadalafil out of the reach of children. Sexual activity can put extra strain on your heart, which may be unsafe for people with certain health problems, such as a recent heart attack. Talk to your healthcare provider to see if your heart is strong enough for sex. If you feel chest pain, dizziness, or nausea during sex, stop and contact your healthcare provider right away. Tadalafil does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
Tadalafil belongs to a group of medicines, known as phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors, which are used to treat erectile dysfunction or pulmonary arterial hypertension. You should not take more than one PDE-5 inhibitor medicine. Medicines in this group include avanafil (Stendra), sildenafil (Viagra, Revatio, and others), tadalafil (Cialis and others), and vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn). If you take liquid tadalafil, shake the bottle well for 30 seconds before use. Use an accurate measuring device to measure your dose. Do not take double or extra doses. Some tadalafil products are meant to be used only when needed.
A household spoon is not an accurate measuring device and may cause you to take the wrong dose. Ask your pharmacist to recommend an appropriate measuring device. Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if tadalafil is right for you. In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.
Tell your tadalafil 40mg healthcare provider if you have any of the following. Heart problems, such as heart rhythm problems, chest pain, or heart failure Heart attack, stroke, or heart surgery within the past six months High blood pressure that is still too high despite taking medicines for it Peyronie's disease, or a penis with an abnormal curve or shape An erection lasting longer than four hours A blood disorder, such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia An inherited eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa Vision loss, or a problem with the nerve between your eyes and brain (optic nerve) Health conditions or factors that raise the risk of optic nerve problems, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, being older than 50, or having a “crowded disc,” which is something an eye doctor may see in an eye exam Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease, a condition where blood vessels in the lungs are blocked It is not known if or how tadalafil could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should take tadalafil while you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. It is not known if tadalafil passes into breast milk. Take it as your healthcare provider recommends. This survey is being conducted by the WebMD marketing sciences department.
While less common, the most serious side effects of tadalafil are described below, along with what to do if they happen. Tadalafil may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop taking tadalafil and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives Tadalafil may cause an unwanted erection that is persistent, painful, and that may occur without sexual arousal. Permanent damage to the penis may occur if priapism is not treated quickly.
Stop taking tadalafil and get emergency help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of priapism. Erection lasting for more than 4 hours Erection that is unrelated to sexual stimulation If you feel faint or dizzy, lie down. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of low blood pressure. Tadalafil can cause mild, temporary vision changes such as seeing a blue tint, abnormal colors, blurry vision, or sensitivity to light. Though rare, some people have reported permanent vision loss. Prostate cancer (PC) detection has dramatically increased in Western countries with more patients being diagnosed at an earlier stage and at a younger age.
This has translated into an increased number of localized diseases receiving external beam radiotherapy with a curative intent. Successful treatment and longer life expectancy have been accompanied by a raising proportion of patients complaining of erectile dysfunction (ED) as an expression of post-radiation late toxicity. A recent review reported ED rates reaching 24–84% in patients undergoing three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT) for PC [1].
Before the advent of the phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDE5-I) era only scanty information on post-radiation therapy of ED were available. Treatment of post-radiation ED with PDE5-I has gained little attention so far with only a few published phase II studies 2, 3.
Stop taking tadalafil and get help right away if you have sudden vision loss in one or both eyes. Tadalafil may cause a sudden decrease or loss of hearing. Stop taking tadalafil and tell your healthcare provider right away if you experience hearing loss or have any of the following symptoms. People who are allergic to any of the following should not take tadalafil. Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed Your pharmacist can tell you all of the ingredients in the specific tadalafil products they stock.
Tadalafil should not be taken while you are using certain other medicines. Before taking tadalafil, tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. See the Interactions section for more details. Do not take tadalafil unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Do not share tadalafil with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. In one of these, sildenafil significantly improved the erectile function (EF) domain of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) compared with placebo with up to 90% of patients being able to perform a successful intercourse using the maximal available dose (100 mg) [2]. Tadalafil (Cialis®, Eli Lilly and Company, Indianapolis, IN, USA), a relatively new selective PDE5-I 4, 5, proved effective in nearly 50% of patients treated with 20 mg on demand in the only trial on post-radiation ED patients currently available [6]. In view of its long half-life (17.5 hours) and steady-state plasma concentrations attained within 5 days of daily dosing [7], a once-a-day therapy formulation has been developed. A study compared 10-mg once-a-day with 20-mg on-demand dosing in an ED population of various etiologies, demonstrating that 72% of men preferred daily therapy [8], with a successful completion of sexual intercourse statistically higher for daily tadalafil than for on-demand dosing. A subsequent randomized trial demonstrated the 5-mg daily dose equally effective but better tolerated than the 10-mg dose [9]. In the current study, we aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of once-a-day dosing of tadalafil 5 mg with the 20-mg on-demand formulation in a series of patients who developed ED following curative radiotherapy for PC.
